Tec Hub founder member Ben Louis Mawson (benmawson.com) is bringing music to the ears of visitors to Gosport with his new immersive audio portrait of the town.
Written In Water: A Portrait of A Town, created by Ben, is a specially-commissioned visitor experience that explores Gosport’s distinctive character and maritime history using spoken word, local and archive recordings and an original musical composition.
The audio experience uses layers of virtual sound that hang invisibly above the landscape, accessible with GPS-connected handsets, or Android phones.
As part of the innovative project, Ben, who joined Tec Hub last month, spent months speaking with Gosport residents and community groups to capture their reminiscences and stories, making it a truly unique experience.
Speaking about the project, Ben said: “Written In Water invites listeners to embark on soundwalks around Gosport, to enter the fluid, ever-changing virtual soundscape: literally music you can walk inside. It’s like walking in your very own soundscape complete with surround sound.”
Written In Water: A Portrait of A Town, which was built using noTours software for Android, will be officially launched by the Mayor of Gosport on May 3 at the Gosport Discovery Centre.
The experience is part of a series of projects being delivered by New Dimensions (newdimensions.org.uk), a Hampshire-based initiative that aims to find new ways of involving people in music.
Anyone in Gosport who wishes to experience Written In Water can simply borrow a handset from the Gosport Discovery Centre (www3.hants.gov.uk/gdc) with their library card, or download the
